Battling Bolton put up a fine fight against rivals Rochdale

Action from the game

Bolton Rugby Union Club’s Under-14s hosted their Rochdale counterparts and despite being on the wrong end of a 24-12 scoreline, put in a battling display.

In a fiercely-contested match, the U14s faced off against a powerful and well-drilled Rochdale side.

Despite Bolton’s valiant efforts and moments of brilliance, Rochdale emerged victorious in a game that showcased skill, determination, and teamwork from both teams.

The match began with Rochdale asserting their dominance early on.

A driving run from their number seven broke through Bolton’s defence, resulting in the first try of the game, which was successfully converted.

Bolton, however, responded brilliantly, as Brody powered through the middle for a driving try. Luka’s precision with the boot saw Bolton equalise with the conversion, making it 7-7 by the end of the first quarter.

With referees swapping, the second quarter saw increased intensity.

Rochdale surged ahead again, breaking through Bolton’s line and gaining 30 yards before being brought down in a heroic tackle by Joel.

Despite Bolton’s efforts to disrupt their attack, Rochdale maintained possession, scoring another try, which they converted.

Their momentum continued as they charged down again, managing to score despite a controversial knock-on call.

This time, the conversion attempt fell short, leaving the score at 19-7 by half time.

After the interval, both teams returned with renewed determination, resulting in a hard-fought, scoreless quarter.

Bolton’s scrummaging was immense, and the tackling from both sides was relentless.

Great passing and teamwork were on display, with several Bolton players breaking through Rochdale’s defence, but unable to capitalise.

The players’ growing strength and resilience was evident in every scrum and tackle.

In the final quarter, Bolton came out with fire in their bellies, determined to close the gap.

Their persistence paid off when they clawed their way back to the try line, with a well-earned try finally scored.

However, the conversion attempts by Jack and Dane narrowly missed the mark.

Rochdale countered with a huge kick and looked set to score again, but Brody’s quick-thinking and defensive kick over the try line prevented a certain score.

Despite the final scoreline, there were plenty of positives for the Bolton youngsters.

They included Brody’s powerful runs and crucial defensive plays, and Joel’s heroic tackle to halt Rochdale’s 30-yard break.

There was also exceptional teamwork, passing, and tackling from Bolton, showing their potential against a strong opposition.

“This was a tough match against a formidable side,” said Bolton’s coach, Alex Youngman.

“The boys showed incredible grit, skill, and teamwork.

“Rochdale’s power and speed proved the difference, but we’re proud of how we played.

“These are the games that help us grow.”

Bolton U14s may not have taken the win, but their performance left the crowd in no doubt of the talent and determination of this promising young team.
