3 Best Buyout Candidates For Oklahoma City Thunder

Following the 2024 NBA trade deadline, the Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves with a few roster spots to fill. While they made significant moves acquiring Gordon Hayward and Bismack Biyombo, they still have room to enhance their roster, particularly in the frontcourt.

Exploring the buyout market, the Thunder could target veterans who can provide leadership and depth in the center role as they battle for the West with a record of 36-17, which is the 3rd best at the moment. Here are three potential buyout candidates that could bolster the Thunder’s lineup down the stretch.

3. Marcus Morris

Marcus Morris, a seasoned forward, offers valuable experience and scoring prowess. With his ability to stretch the floor and provide a scoring punch off the bench, Morris could complement the Thunder’s offensive schemes.

Despite a recent stint with the Philadelphia 76ers, where his offensive numbers saw a slight dip, Morris remains a reliable three-point threat, averaging 6.7 points and 2.9 rebounds on 43.9% shooting from the field and an impressive 40.0% from 3-point range.

His versatility to play multiple positions adds depth to the Thunder’s rotation, making him a viable buyout target for Oklahoma City. Morris expected to be bought out by the San Antonio Spurs as he aims to achieve playoff success.

2. Furkan Korkmaz

Furkan Korkmaz brings youth and energy to the Thunder’s lineup. While he may not have garnered significant minutes with the Philadelphia 76ers, Korkmaz possesses potential as a wing player. At just 26 years old, he offers room for development and could thrive in a system that emphasizes player growth.

Korkmaz was waived by the Indiana Pacers, who had acquired him as part of the Buddy Hield trade. His best season with the Sixers came back in 2020, where he averaged 9.8 points and 2.3 rebonds on 43.0% shooting from the field and 40.2% shooting from 3-point range

Korkmaz’s ability to space the floor and contribute offensively, albeit inconsistently, adds depth to the Thunder’s wing rotation. With the right guidance and opportunities, Korkmaz could blossom into a valuable asset for Oklahoma City.

1. Thaddeus Young

Thaddeus Young emerges as a compelling buyout candidate for the Thunder. As a seasoned veteran with playoff experience, Young brings leadership and versatility to the frontcourt. Despite his transition to the center position, Young’s adept passing and offensive skill set make him a valuable addition to the Thunder’s roster.

While his defensive metrics may raise some concerns, Young’s ability to facilitate plays and contribute offensively offsets any shortcomings. He has averaged 5.0 points and 3.3 rebounds for the Toronto Raptors this season, while shooting at 62.1% from the field. Young could be a strong addition for this young Thunder team, who have been facing problems at the center position due to a lack of size.

His presence in the locker room and on the court could provide a significant boost to the Thunder’s playoff aspirations, making him an ideal target in the buyout market.
