She has reportedly represented many journalists who have been arrested after reporting on international atrocities and also represented victims of mass atrocities and g*nocide. Amal Clooney Advised ICC On Benjamin Netanyahu’s Arrest Warrant
The Israel-Hamas war has been raging on for the past year with tens of thousands of reported casualties. Devastating news of the victims has reportedly been coming out every week with a permanent ceasefire nowhere in sight. The International Criminal Court, however, has repeatedly issued an arrest warrant for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (via BBC).
The ICC has reportedly found reasonable grounds to issue warrants against Netanyahu, former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas’ military commander Mohammed Deif. All three have been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Netanyahu has reportedly rejected the decision of the ICC, calling it anti-Semitic (via BBC).
Amal Clooney was reportedly a special advisor for the prosecution team on the arrest warrants. ICC prosecutor Karim Khan reportedly thanked Clooney and a team of lawyers who helped investigate the crimes the three were accused of and came to a conclusion (via The Guardian). Clooney stated her involvement (via the Clooney Foundation of Justice),
As a human rights lawyer, I will never accept that one child’s life has less value than another’s. I do not accept that any conflict should be beyond the reach of the law, nor that any perpetrator should be above the law. So I support the historic step that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has taken to bring justice to victims of atrocities in Israel and Palestine.
Amal Clooney also mentioned that the special advisory team came to a unanimous decision despite their diverse backgrounds.
Amal Clooney Issued An Op-Ed On Being Involved In The Panel
Amal Clooney has worked as an international human rights lawyer and has represented multiple victims of mass atrocities and g*nocide. She was reportedly part of the legal team that represented journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were reportedly arrested in Myanmar for 500 days for reporting on Rohingya casualties in the country (via CNN).
Clooney was also a part of the defense team for Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa. She served as a special advisor for the ICC’s Karim Khan in applying for arrest warrants against Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and a few Hamas leaders. In a joint op-ed in the Financial Times, the team along with Clooney issued a statement regarding their involvement,
There is no doubt that the step taken today by the prosecutor is a milestone in the history of international criminal law. There is no conflict that should be excluded from the reach of the law; no child’s life valued less than another’s. The law we apply is humanity’s law, not the law of any given side. It must protect all the victims of this conflict; and all civilians in conflicts to come.
The statement was reportedly published back in May when Khan had submitted applications to the ICC for the arrest warrants, which have now been issued. The USA reportedly does not recognize the ICC (via The New York Times).
