It was meant to have been a US election that rested on a razor’s edge, a contest that was simply too close to predict.
By the time Fox News called the result at 6.50am Irish time, it was clear that it had been anything but: Donald Trump, the bookies’ favourite, had trounced Kamala Harris in a result that was not so much a defeat for the Democrats as a humiliation.
