Jay’s parents will appear in Ghosts season 4, and Sam’s father will finally arrive, played by Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris. The show’s creators also teased Jay gaining the ability to see the Woodstone B&B’s ghosts in season 4, a show-shaking twist.
After all, the ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are the real stars of the series. It will be fun to see Sam and Jay’s relationship evolve and find out more about their families of origin, but Thor, Isaac, Hetty, Sass, Flower, Pete, and the rest of the house’s undead inhabitants provide the backbone of the series. This is why it is a little surprising that Ghosts season 4 has no apparent plans to expand on the story of one central spirit. Fortunately, this is a good decision for the show’s future.

By the looks of things, Hetty won’t play a major role in Ghosts season 4, and this could be a surprisingly positive development for the lady of the manor. Hetty’s powers have not yet been revealed by the sitcom, so viewers might reasonably have hoped that season 4 would see her explore her supernatural abilities. However, it is important to note that Ghosts season 4 has already teased numerous major storylines for living and dead characters alike. Isaac’s kidnapping in the season 3 finale will introduce a new villain to the series, Mary Holland’s Patience.
Although Ghosts season 4’s new character Patience the Puritan may not stay unambiguously villainous for long, she will take up screen time and story focus as the ghosts adjust to her presence at the Woodstone B&B. Jay’s ability to see ghosts in season 4 may also be influenced by Patience, as this might be the “Intense” ability one of the show’s stars mentioned to TVLine. Speaking of Sam and Jay, they will be busy with more than visits from their respective in-laws in season 4. According to the show’s producers, their marriage will struggle in season 4.

Considering how busy Ghosts season 4’s story sounds, it is no surprise that Hetty isn’t taking center stage in the outing. Hetty’s powers and her character deserve the unalloyed focus on Ghosts, since the sitcom supporting star has a surprisingly poignant side underneath her unfriendly exterior. To properly humanize Hetty, Ghosts would need to ensure that her character arc wasn’t overshadowed by Sam and Jay’s latest issue or a new ghost, like Patience. Thus, Ghosts season 4 ignoring Hetty is better than the series rushing through the revelation of her powers and backstory.
There is simply not enough time for Ghosts season 4 to offer a sympathetic storyline for Hetty.
Hetty has a lot of untapped potential, as evidenced by the slow thawing of her ice queen persona in the first three seasons of the series. However, as Ghosts season 4 reveals Sass’s backstory and makes Patience part of the cast, there is simply not enough time for the show to also offer a sympathetic storyline for Hetty. She can continue to play a pivotal role in the manor’s lineup of ghosts. However, her dedicated plot line should be saved for a later outing when it can receive the focus it deserves, like Alberta’s murder in season 2.

Hetty’s Powers Only Grow More Intriguing With Each Passing Season
Furthermore, the longer Ghosts leaves Hetty’s powers unexplained, the more intriguing they become. So far, the powers of the show’s ghosts have been mixed blessings, to say the least. Pete’s ability to move beyond the bounds of the Woodstone B&B is pretty useful, whereas the foul odor Isaac creates is less impressive. Trevor and Flower’s powers are strong, while Alberta’s ability to be heard by humans comes in handy less frequently than might reasonably be expected.

Not only could Hetty’s backstory revive Ghosts’ use of real-life historical characters, but her powers could be the strongest seen in the series so far. Already, Patience’s “Intense” power sounds like it will up the ante in terms of what viewers can expect from the show’s specters. This means that, if Hetty does have to wait until after season 4 to find out her powers, they will likely be even more impressive. This trend proves that Ghosts season 4 making viewers wait to find out Hetty’s story could be a surprisingly good idea.
