YEAR ONE Weapon, But This Time Even Darker

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman and Robin #10!One of the coolest weapons Batman ever used in the iconic “Year One” storyline gets a major, if not disturbing, improvement. The Dark Knight comes face-to-face with a seriously improved Man-Bat, who’s out to transform Gotham into a city of hybrids. Thankfully, Batman’s latest gadget helps turn things in his favor.

In Batman and Robin #10 by Joshua Williamson, Simone Di Meo, and Nikola Čižmešija, Man-Bat is taking Gotham City and plans to use genetically altered bats to transform its citizens. Batman takes to the skies to stop Kirk Langstrom.

YEAR ONE Weapon, But This Time Even Darker

Robin tries to figure out a way to help Batman stop the bats without hurting them when his girlfriend Flatline arrives with a gun containing gas pellets Man-Bat used to turn bats against Batman. Robin hands the gun to the Dark Knight and Batman uses the gas on Man-Bat, causing a swarm of bats to envelop him.

Over the years, Batman has had a lot of cool gadgets and gizmos to help his crusade against crime. While he only had a few basic gadgets during the first year of his career, Batman had one that really came in handy during the “Year One” storyline. Batman was being hunted by the Gotham City Police Department and was running out of places to hide so he utilized an ultrasonic bat beacon. The device sent out a high frequency that attracted a swarm of bats. The bats created the distraction Batman needed to escape while everyone was panicking.

Unlike the ultrasonic bat beacon, the gas Man-Bat created alters the pheromones of whomever it comes into contact with, causing the bats to go mad and attack. Bruce found that out the hard way when Man-Bat used Batman as a test subject and was nearly killed by a cloud of bats. Now the gun is in Batman’s possession and if he ever so desired, Bruce could easily use it to change the pheromones of any villain he fights and let the bats handle the rest. But while it’s an interesting idea, it might be a little extreme, even for Batman.

Batman Won’t Use Gadgets That Puts Bats at Risk

Sure, Batman had no problem using the sonic beacon to call on bats when he needed to get out of a jam. But that was back when Bruce was younger and not as skilled as he is today. Not to mention, he’s got a son that cares deeply for the safety of animals and Batman’s not going to use them as attack dogs (or attack bats, rather) just because he’s got a gadget that can do that. It’s a fun twist on an old classic, but one that Batman could probably do better without.
