X-Men’s New Danger Room Says Everything You Need to Know About Their New Era

Warning: Contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men (2024) #3!As the X-Men continue to rise “From the Ashes” during their relaunch, so does their iconic super-powered training space, the Danger Room. Since the Fall of X and the franchise’s pivot from the Krakoa era, the X-Men have scattered across different corners of the Marvel Universe. When Rogue finds herself responsible for four young mutants in the south, she establishes a makeshift place for them to hone their abilities.

Uncanny X-Men (2024) #3 – written by Gail Simone with art by David Marquez – finds Rogue begin training for her new mutant class outside the St. Juniors’ home where a friend from Gambit’s past in Louisiana took everyone in. With the surrounding forest, the mutants worked together to fashion their new Danger Room setup.

Rogue’s Danger Room is built with hay and wood, with pieces resembling a massive ship, as Nightcrawler helps train the young mutants as a swashbuckling sparring partner. Though this version of the space isn’t as powerful as the X-Men’s usual Danger Room, it serves the same purpose.

What Rogue builds for her class of young mutants is indicative of the current X-Men era as a whole, as it is slowly built back from the ashes within a new status quo. It’s not really a room at all, and the danger comes from Nightcrawler’s fighting practice with the mutants on the various wooden structures they’ve built in the open field. Constructed near or on the St. Juniors family’s land – after they took the X-Men in – the new space is not technologically advanced like the Danger Room at Xavier’s School, but allows Rogue to train the four wild mutants.

Uncanny X-Men introduced Jitter, Deathdream, Ransom, and Calico as the series’ new mutants, and they were immediately able to go toe-to-toe with the superheroes on Rogue’s team. However, the four teens have a terrifying mutant-hunting villain on their tail, and need all the coaching they can get from their fellow established mutant heroes to both defend themselves and use their powers safely. After the end of the Krakoa era, Rogue re-establishes a necessary piece of X-Men lore that will help her fellow mutants flourish in the face of the real life danger that is coming.

A Brief History Of The X-Men’s Danger Room, Explained

First Appearance: 1963’s X-Men #1 – Created By Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

The Danger Room can be seen in issues as early as the X-Men were introduced, with a version of it existing in their very first issue of X-Men by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. After a subsequent appearance in the subsequent issue, the Danger Room was given its name and officially established for the first class of mutant heroes. As a training facility inside Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the Danger Room was often a safe way for the school’s inexperienced mutant fighters to figure out and develop how to best use their powers when in the field.

It’s not all fun, games, and learning exercises when it comes to the Danger Room; it has earned the “danger” in its name and sometimes turned into something more sinister over the years. The room’s safety protocols have been compromised by villains and put students at risk, and the room has even become a sentient villain previously. Simply named Danger, this living manifestation of the X-Men’s training facility software became a formidable foe and sometimes friend of the mutants. Danger was on the other side of their fight during the Krakoa era, and has been missing in action since then.

In the line-wide relaunch of X-Men comics, Xavier’s School is largely missing as the mutant heroes scatter across the world with various different missions. With a rivalry brewing between Rogue and Cyclops, Rogue is put in the Professor X role, with Cyclops becoming a Magneto-type figure in their new era, and the two teams are destined to battle against each other in future issues. As Rogue trains new mutants and rebuilds the Danger Room as an important aspect of X-Men training, things could lead to her forming some new type of School for Gifted Youngsters to complete her arc.

As a version of the Danger Room makes a return to Marvel Comics, the all-new X-Men successfully rise to face new challenges.

The reformation of the world of X-Men after the time of Krakoa has been complicated and messy in the Marvel Universe, and Rogue is having trouble keeping Wolverine by her side as the mutants try to pick up the pieces of their society. After dealing with Orchis and their massacring of mutants at the Fall of X, new anti-mutant villains continue to pop up, and the young mutants need help to stay protected and alive with their mutant status. As a version of the Danger Room makes a return to Marvel Comics, the all-new X-Men successfully rise to face new challenges.
