‘A terrible tragedy’ – Two teenagers die, a third in hospital following crash between tractor and car in Co Mayo

Two male teenagers have died following a collision between a tractor and a car in Co Mayo on Friday night.

Two occupants of the car, a male juvenile in his teens and an adult male in his teens, were fatally injured in the collision on the N83 at Levallyroe shortly after 8pm.

Another male juvenile in his teens was transferred to Mayo University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the tractor, a man aged in his 50s, was brought to Mayo University Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Fine Gael councillor Alma Gallagher, a native of nearby Ballyhaunis, said the local community is “absolutely devastated” following the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, and we are united in grief, to support those two families. It’s just shocking. A terrible, terrible tragedy,” she said.

A Family Liasion Officer has been assigned to support the families of those who died in the incident. The road remains closed while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carry out a technical examination.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
