Jujutsu Kaisen‘s manga has finally ended, and its final chapter proves the series absolutely needs a prequel. Gege Akutami’s popular battle manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, has finally concluded its six-year-long story with chapter #271. Though fans’ hopes for a sequel or continuation have been squashed, a prequel may still be in the cards, if not necessary, considering how much the finale teases about the past of the main villain, Sukuna, while stressing just how little fans know about him.
Chapter #271 concludes Jujutsu Kaisen‘s story on a happy note as Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara safely complete their final mission. The episode also touches on Gojo’s final words to Yuji and Sukuna’s fate yet again, giving fans more closure in both regards. While the series has carefully laid out Sukuna’s unique philosophy and his actions and choices are understandable, the series rarely touches on Sukuna’s past and what made him the compelling antagonist that fans know him as. As such, even though Jujutsu Kaisen may not get a sequel, it is still ripe for a prequel that would help expand on Sukuna’s character.
Jujutsu Kaisen Needs a Heian Era Prequel to Explain Sukuna’s Past
A Prequel Centered Around Sukuna Would Meaningfully Expand on His Character
Despite being the ultimate antagonist of the series, no other character in Jujutsu Kaisen has been as shrouded in mystery as Ryomen Sukuna. Little is known about Sukuna when he was still human other than the fact that he was a creepy or unwanted child and that he ate his twin in the womb, as the final arc revealed.
Flashbacks of Sukuna during the Heian era are sparse and have only added to the mystery surrounding his character instead of explaining them, and Jujutsu Kaisen‘s final chapter leaves fans hanging with these questions. As such, a prequel would help expand on Sukuna’s character in very meaningful ways, finally giving fans a glimpse into what made the monster that has terrorized jujutsu society for millennia.
Other than Sukuna’s childhood, there are also many unanswered questions about how Sukuna was able to split his soul into twenty fragments, what drove him to do so, how he was defeated during the Heian Era, and who it was who defeated him if he truly stood at the very top during the Golden Era of Jujutsu. Chapter #271 also leaves fans wanting to see more about Sukuna’s relationship with Uraume who was so loyal that they gave up their life without a second doubt when Sukuna was defeated.
Jujutsu Kaisen Has Teased the Heian Era Too Many Times to Ignore
Some fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have previously argued against a prequel set in the Heian Era as it would simply be a mirror of the final Shinjuku Showdown Arc only with new characters that fans haven’t gotten the time to meet properly. However, Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Culling Game Arc has already introduced fans to quite a few reincarnated sorcerers from the era, such as Uro, Kashimo, Angel, and Yorozu.
The most interesting of these is Uro, whose violent history with Sukuna has been hinted at in bits and pieces across Jujutsu Kaisen. Chapter #238 in particular teases that Sukuna not only annihilated the Sun Moon and Stars Squad led by Uro but also battled angels that were part of the Abe Clan’s elite forces. There also have been curious mentions of a Fujiwara Clan (who Uro worked for as an assassin) and a Sugawara Clan that is most likely connected to Gojo and Yuta’s mysterious ancestor, Michizane Sugawara.
Despite all these mentions of the Heian Era and intriguing characters that lived during the time, Jujutsu Kaisen never properly got the chance to properly delve into the era. As such, a prequel would finally help explain all of these mysteries while rounding out Sukuna’s character, who is already one of the most compelling characters of the series as a whole, despite how little fans know about him. Granted, not every antagonist needs an extensive past to help fans understand them, and while this is certainly in Sukuna’s case, a prequel would very much help enrich Jujutsu Kaisen‘s franchise as a whole.

It follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he becomes entangled in the world of Jujutsu Sorcery after swallowing a cursed talisman—Ryomen Sukuna’s finger—and becomes the host for one of the most powerful curses. Yuji joins the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College to learn how to combat curses while searching for the remaining fingers of Sukuna to exorcise him permanently.
