Charges filed against man accused of spraying victim with 'chemical irritant' during robbery at CTA Red Line stop

CHICAGO — A Chicago man accused of robbing a person at a CTA Red Line stop on the city’s North Side has been taken into custody, police say.

According to Chicago police, 24-year-old John Wesley, a Douglas resident, has been charged with one felony count of armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The charge stems from an alleged robbery that unfolded around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, at a Red Line stop in the 1100 block of West Granville Avenue, in Edgewater.

Authorities say Wesley allegedly approached a 23-year-old man and sprayed him with a “chemical irritant” before forcefully stealing his property.

Last weekend, detectives shared a photo captured by a CTA surveillance camera that showed the suspect around the time of the alleged robbery.

Authorities say Wesley was taken into custody in the 2700 block of South California Avenue, in South Lawndale, on Friday.

The suspect appeared in court on Saturday for a detention hearing.
