DMV facilities across US experience network outage

CHICAGO (WGN) — DMV facilities across the country experienced a network outage Thursday.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias posted an advisory about the outage on X shortly after 10 a.m. CDT, writing, “We are currently experiencing a nationwide network outage at our DMV facilities. All DMVs across the country are currently down.”

Other DMV offices, such as those in Arkansas, Massachusetts and Virginia, had also confirmed an outage affecting services.

“DMVs across the country are having trouble issuing car tags and licenses as the database maintained by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators is currently down,” a tweet from the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration warned.

Both agencies in Arkansas and Virginia announced their databases were back up and running shortly before 12 p.m. CDT.

The cause of the outage is unknown at this time.

The secretary of state in Illinois had advised the public to call ahead before visiting a DMV, warning of impacts to operating hours or services, including road tests.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
