Everything We Know About The Inside Out Spinoff Show

Pixar’s Inside Out franchise is continuing to expand with the announcement of a new spinoff series entitled Dream Productions which is due to land on Disney+ in 2024. Set between the first and second Inside Out movies, Dream Productions will center on the corner of Riley’s head that is responsible for producing all of her dreams. Modeled after a film studio, the titular production company faces the usual trials and tribulations of fast-paced schedules and razor-thin budgets all to help Riley get a good night’s sleep and make sense of the world around her.

Much like Pixar’s Monsters at Work series, Dream Productions explores another aspect of the Inside Out franchise, and expands upon a moment that was shown briefly in the first film. Inside Out 2‘s massive box office success has proven that the series is another bona fide Pixar blockbuster, but Dream Productions offers new storytelling possibilities without the grandeur of a theatrical release. Though many details surrounding Dream Productions are unknown, it will act as an “inbetweenquel” that fills in the story gaps between the two beloved Pixar films.

Riley’s Original Emotions Will Also Appear

With Dream Productions set to arrive in 2024, Pixar has revealed many details about the voice cast of the upcoming spinoff. The cast of Inside Out 2 was much larger than its predecessor, but only Riley’s classic emotions will be able to appear because it takes place before the events of the sequel. Kensington Tallman will be returning to voice Riley once again, and she’ll be joined by Amy Poehler (Joy), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Lewis Black (Anger), Tony Hale (Fear), and Liza Lapira (Disgust).

The Pixar website now features a section about Dream Productions, and even seemingly reveals who the main characters of the show will be. According to Pixar, Paula Pell’s Paula Persimmon (Dream Productions’ intrepid director) will be the central focus of the series alongside Xeni, (played by Richard Ayoade) an aspiring young dream maker. This also opens the door for other staff members from the studio to appear as characters, but nothing else has been revealed yet.

Much like a Hollywood film studio, Dream Productions is on a tight time crunch and inspired director Paula Persimmon is the one who has delivered hit after hit for years.

Pixar’s next foray onto the small screen was shrouded in mystery for quite some time, but now Dream Productions‘ story is much clearer. T he series will take place on the lot of Dream Productions, the studio inside Riley’s head that is responsible for making her dreams each night. Much like a Hollywood film studio, Dream Productions is on a tight time crunch and inspired director Paula Persimmon is the one who has delivered hit after hit for years. However, as Riley begins to age, Paula finds that her usual glittery dreams of princesses and rainbows don’t cut it anymore.

This inspires Paula to seek out the help of aspiring young dream director Xeni, who might just have what it takes to make new dreams for the burgeoning teenager. Along with that basic framework, Pixar has also noted that Dream Productions will take the form of a mockumentary (much like The Office) and will presumably feature a documentary crew following Paula and Xeni as they try to make Riley’s dreams a reality.

In September 2024, Disney revealed the first official look at Dream Productions via a trailer for the new limited series. Opening with a mockumentary style interview with Joy, the teaser then shows behind-the-scenes antics at the eponymous studio. Though a lot of the story is kept out of the trailer, the teaser does establish the wacky tone of the Inside Out spinoff.
