Heat wave can raise temperatures above 40°C in

This, which is the last week of winter, will be one of high temperatures in most of Brazil. One heat wave caused by a mass of hot air could take the temperature above 40 °C. Meteorological services do not rule out that there are cases of maximum temperatures already recorded not only for the month of September but at any time in some locations.

According to the MetSul, there is potential for breaking temperature records in all five regions of the country. The highest temperatures should be recorded in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, states where most cities should have thermometers showing 40 °C or more. Amazonas, Bahia, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rondônia, São Paulo and Tocantins are also expected to experience extreme heat.

The city of São Paulo, for example, is one of the places where record temperatures are likely to be recorded. Since measurements began in 1943, the maximum ever measured in the city was 37.8 ºC, on October 17, 2014. Several cities in the interior of the state may also have days of historic temperatures.

According to MetSul, the air mass that will cover the country is considered “extremely hot”. Temperatures will begin to rise at the beginning of the week in the Midwest and Southeast. In the middle of the week, the air mass will be strengthened and the occurrence of atypically high temperatures for this time of year will increase. Winter ends at dawn on Saturday (23).

“This is a situation of high danger due to the severity of the expected heat and will demand attention from the authorities. There will be several states in which the heat will be very intense and extreme”, warned Metsul.

According to the Climate, only Rio Grande do Sul should stay out of the expected heat wave. There is also an alert for drop in air humidity, which could reach alert levels, especially in the Northeast. Therefore, the recommendation is that the population of all other states pay attention, avoiding outdoor exercise during the hottest hours of the day, reinforcing hydration.
