The UEFA Champions League returns this week, with several changes in place this season, including 36 teams competing (as opposed to 32 in the past), and the elimination of the group phase in favor of the new league system. In the league system, sometimes called the Swiss system, the 36 competing teams will be divided into four groups of nine and will play two teams from each group. At the end of eight games, the top eight teams will go into a round of 16 while teams in ninth to 24th will go into a playoff round.
