One dead and five injured in shooting attack on NY subway | World and Science

Shots were allegedly fired after an argument between groups of teenagersDisclosure

One person died and five others were injured in a shooting attack that occurred this Monday, 12th, in a New York subway station, just before rush hour, according to information from firefighters.

Authorities received the emergency call shortly after 4:30 pm (6:30 pm Brasília time). First, it was reported that six injured people were taken to hospital and one of them was pronounced dead, said police, who blamed an argument between a group of teenagers traveling in a subway car.

“We do not believe this was a random attack (…) We believe this shooting attack originated from a dispute between two groups that began on a train,” said city police traffic chief Michael Kemper.

“Unfortunately, one of the victims, a 34-year-old man, was pronounced dead,” he added.

The elevated subway station on Mount Eden Avenue, in the Bronx neighborhood, was isolated by police, who, together with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, were carrying out an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

Shooting attacks are common in the United States, where there are about 400 million guns, more than people.

Polls show that a majority of Americans favor stricter gun regulation, but the powerful gun lobby and mobilized voters who support gun ownership for self-defense and for fun have repeatedly blocked action.

New York has a lower homicide rate than many large American cities, and possessing firearms in public is illegal for civilians in almost all cases.
