This Working Life: ‘Today we forget with motherhood that you have a special role in society’

Meena Purushothaman, the HSE’s National Assistant Breastfeeding Co-ordinator, chats with Mary McCarthy about the importance of research and education, and why working in child health is such a fulfilling career

Before 2017 the national breastfeeding co-ordinator could have a background in health promotion, but I have 35 years’ clinical experience and come from a country where breastfeeding is the norm.

In India, where I grew up, there is a lot of heat and drought and when I moved to Ireland in 2003, after six years of working in Bahrain, I loved the cold and the green so much.
