A new Yellowstone set video reveals tighter script security after the Kevin Costner exit. Yellowstone is a Taylor Sheridan-created series that tells the story of the Dutton family ranch in Montana as they work to fight against others who are encroaching on their land. The series starred Kevin Costner in the original series, who later left the show. In addition to Costner, Yellowstone features a leading cast including Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Brecken Merrill. Yellowstone season 5, part 2 arrives on Sunday, November 10.
Now, a new video for Yellowstone from their official YouTube channel reveals how much security there was on the set of Yellowstone season 5, part 2. Actor Asbille said that “this season has been very secretive.”
Director Christina Voros added that “There was a lot of security around the script, and the narrative.” Asbille’s co-star Jennifer Landon even added that she and the rest of the team would “get these redacted scripts. Basically everything [was] blacked out except for [each actor’s] lines.” Voros commended the crew for their commitment to changing their ways “for the sake of the audience.”

Actor Denim Richards added that these set practices “add[] to a little bit more of a uniqueness,” as the “audience this year will really see real reactions.” Voros teases that audiences will be “seeing the cast at the absolute top of their game.” In these explanations, it is clear that the result of these set practices will be twofold. For one, they will hopefully aid in doing a better job helping the audience feel a genuine since of surprise at what happens in Yellowstone season 5, part 2.
The second effect of this script security will be getting rare performances out of the actors. Not only were actors sworn to secrecy in relation to plot details, but there were also details withheld from the actors themselves. This will make it such that the performance delivered by the Yellowstone team will also include shots of in-the-moment reactions, as actors are surprised at what is happening just as much as audience members will be, as they are surprised too.

So far, I would say that it’s fair to say that Yellowstone has been successful in keeping its upcoming events under wraps. This element of surprise will be crucial to Yellowstone season 5, part 2, as the series will be suffering from the mid-season exit of Costner. Absent this big draw to the show, Yellowstone will have to find other creative ways to keep the audience’s interest. This set video indicates that script security may just be the way to drive audience engagement, as it will keep the surprises going.
