Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he believes the Reds are in the race for the Premier League title after they moved five points clear of Manchester City by beating Aston Villa at Anfield.
“Very big win against a very good team,” Mac Allister said while speaking to TNT Sports. “The goals came in counter-attacks but overall the team played a very good game. We are happy with it. We know we’re top of the league but there are a lot of teams so we take it step by step.
“If we are top of the league by five points then it means something. But we have to go step by step. If you asked me before the season started I would not say we were candidates but now it looks like [we are].”
Just before Liverpool beat Aston Villa by two goals to nil, Manchester City had lost to Mac Allister’s former club, Brighton, who the Reds won twice against in the space of just four days last week.
“I did know,” Mac Allister admitted. “We were watching the game. I am happy for Brighton. I have special feelings for them, I am very grateful. They beat one of the best teams in the world right now but we are not thinking about other teams.”
And finally, Mac Allister was also asked about Salah, who has now moved onto 10 goals and 10 assists already this season. “He is so good and so important for the team,” the Argentine said. “He is a legend here. Happy for him and when you have him you know he is going to deliver and get the numbers.”
Liverpool.com says: It is impossible to ignore Liverpool and it would be silly to say anything other than the Reds are well ahead of where most people assumed they would be at this point in the campaign. That match at Anfield against Manchester City in three weeks is looking more and more colossal by the day.
