Oliver Glasner believes Crystal Palace’s most experienced players should have demonstrated more support for Premier League debutant Justin Devenny.

The 21-year-old, who joined the club from Airdrieonians in 2023, became the first academy player to start under Glasner.

Devenny lost possession just once in 74 minutes before being replaced by veteran Jeffery Schlupp.

“He was okay,” Glasner said. “It was a difficult game because you can’t expect a debutant to lead his team in midfield.

“He needed more support from the experienced players around him.

“We didn’t support him how everybody wanted.

“It looked like everybody was thinking about themselves more – what they could do and how they could help the team.

Explaining the decision to partner Devenny with Marc Guehi in midfield, Glasner admitted that the combination failed.

“Marc is one of our most experienced players.

“[The thought process was to] have him next to Justin for his debut. Marc did well against Aston Villa in the last game of last season.

“He’s a very intelligent player and confident on the ball. But, to be honest, it didn’t work.”
