Liverpool boss Arne Slot has offered an update on the fitness of key man Trent Alexander-Arnold, who limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury as the Reds moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League by beating Aston Villa.
“It’s difficult to say how serious it is, but it’s always serious if a player goes out in the first half,” Slot said during his post-match press conference at Anfield. “Not because I didn’t like him, but because he asked for it himself. He didn’t ask for it because he was tired, he asked for it because he felt something.
“That’s first of all not a good sign, but it is always difficult so close after the game to tell you exactly what it is. Let’s wait and see. I would be surprised if we will see him playing for the England national team this week, but hopefully he can.”
Liverpool is already missing four players at the moment with Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott sidelined. No exact date has been placed on their return other than it having definitely been slated for after the November internationals for a while.
“A very big win against a very good team,” Mac Allister told TNT Sports shortly after the final whistle. “I think we dominated the game, we played a very good game.
“The goals came in counter-attacks but I think overall the team played a very good game. We are happy with it. We know that we are top of the league but there is still a lot of games, so we take it step by step.”
He continued: “If you are top of the league, five points ahead, then it means something. But as I say, we have to go step by step. If you ask me before the season started, I wouldn’t say we were candidates but now it looks like [we are]. We are going to keep working and trying to get better.”
