You could call my time huddled in front of a CRT screen, constantly flitting between Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games, a sign of misspent youth, but I wouldn’t be here right now otherwise. The original Spyro trilogy on PS1 easily defined my love for videogames as a whole, and if you’re here, I’d wager the purple dragon had quite the impact on you as well. That’s why I’m delighted to say that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is finally available on Game Pass, and well worth a go for new and old platformer fans alike.
If you’ve not played the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, you really owe it to yourself to give each of the platform games a go. Every one of the three games still holds up astoundingly well, even if the open-ended collectathon zones are relatively quaint by today’s standards. There’s still something so alluring about Spyro hopping around each level, roasting sheep and charging into gnorc behinds.
For me, it’s the original Spyro trilogy’s music that makes each game truly stand the test of time. The Reignited trilogy’s remastered tracks are softer when compared to the source material, but that makes a lot of sense considering the revamped and smoother visuals. That said, we wouldn’t even have the remastered tracks if not for the original composer Stewart Copeland. His work on Spyro is hard-hitting, ethereal, and perfectly encapsulates the dreamlike state of each level. If you prefer the original tracks you can switch to them at any time in Spyro Reignited Trilogy anyway, so everybody wins.
I’d also love to see Toys For Bob, the team behind the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, take another crack at the series. After working on Crash Bandicoot 4, the studio proved that it understands exactly what makes these old platformers tick, so Spyro 4 feels like the perfect next step. Toys For Bob even signed a deal for Xbox to publish its next game, which now owns the likes of Crash, Spyro, Banjo Kazooie, and more. So we might see one of these series come back with TFB at the helm.
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is available on Xbox and PC Game Pass right now. You can also buy the game at 20% off alongside your subscription, so expect to pay $31.99 / £27.99.
