On The Michael Smerconish Program on SiriusXM, Costner shared that he learned about Dutton’s demise only the morning after the episode aired, taking him—and the audience—by surprise.
The episode in question showed Dutton’s unexpected death, first labeled a suicide—but later revealed as a murder plot orchestrated by lawyer Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri) and Jamie Dutton, portrayed by Wes Bentley. Costner admitted, laughing:
I didn’t know it was actually airing last night… I mean, I’ve been seeing ads with my face all over, and I’m thinking, ‘Gee, I’m not in that one.’ I’m not in this season.
Costner, however, hasn’t watched the episode yet. Still, he couldn’t help but wonder if Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan was pulling a fast one. He continued,
I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide. That doesn’t make me wanna rush to go see it… They’re pretty smart people. Maybe it’s a red herring.

Costner looked effortlessly stylish in a navy turtleneck and black glasses, while Castaneda stunned in a black maxi dress.
