Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United tenure may be just a few days old, but we’ve already seeing a vastly different approach to his predecessor Erik Ten Hag.
The Dutch head coach, who was relieved of his duties last month, cut a cold teacher-like figure on the sidelines at Old Trafford, similar to the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho before him. However, Ferguson’s final ever Premier League title is proving a tough act to follow almost a decade on.
United have gone down a different path with this appointment, but not one that hasn’t been walked before. Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer is probably the head coach who bares the most similarity to Amorim – at least on first impressions.

The new Reds boss was spotted hugging his players who stayed behind at Carrington during the current international break, as he introduced himself for the first time.
On a video shared on United’s media channels, Amorim can be seen sharing an embrace with Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and others as he promises to ‘have fun’ with the current crop of players.
Results, of course, will determine how long that “fun” can last but a more personable approach is something that should be admired and it doesn’t mean the 39-year-old won’t lay down the law when the time is right. After all, it worked for Jurgen Klopp during his time at Liverpool.
The German head coach struck up a brilliant rapport with his players, who’d in turn, deliver a Premier League and Champions League title at Anfield. United supporters can only dream of a similar success at the time of writing.
If Amorim is able to get his players on side quickly, the easier it becomes for him to integrate his ideas and get his philosophy across to his players. If they run through a brick wall for him – like Klopp’s Liverpool – then who knows how far United can climb?
