Shikamaru’s Genius Plan in Naruto Had a Major Flaw That Most Fans aren’t Ready to Accept

When it comes to tactical brilliance, very few characters in Naruto can match the level of Shikamaru Nara. Known for his unparalleled intellect and ability to outthink even the strongest opponents, Shikamaru became a fan-favorite character following his intense showdown with Hidan and Kakuzu from Akatsuki. However, even the brightest minds in Naruto sometimes miss critical details, and this becomes more evident as we look back to this thrilling arc.

In Naruto Shippuden, Shikamaru and Kakashi led a team to confront these powerful Akatsuki members, and they crafted a plan focused primarily on neutralizing Hidan. However, they might have left Kakuzu’s threat completely out of the picture, as they had no way to know what his abilities were beforehand.

The Premise of the Iconic Ambush in Naruto Shippuden

The core of Shikamaru’s strategy totally revolved around eliminating Hidan in Naruto. Having witnessed Hidan’s unique ritual on Asuma Sarutobi that allowed him to link his pain with that of his opponents, Shikamaru developed an elaborate plan to counter this ability.

By setting traps and using his Shadow Possession Jutsu, Shikamaru planned to separate Hidan from Kakuzu and lure him into an area where he could safely get rid of him. The team, comprised of Shikamaru, Kakashi, Choji, and Ino, worked under the assumption that Kakuzu, though a capable fighter, was a relatively minor threat compared to Hidan.

It was Kakashi’s task to use his Lightning Blade to strike Kakuzu with such force at the earliest as possible so that he would be dead even before he could retaliate. Shikamaru might have believed that Kakuzu’s capacity to stretch his limbs for long-range battle and his strong physical attacks could be countered with quick, deadly force. However, they were unaware of his special and lethal abilities, which included the ability to fight with elemental jutsu through five different hearts and survive several deadly strikes.

Shikamaru’s Tactical Genius and Its Limitations in Naruto

As it turned out, Kakuzu was far more threatening than Hidan in reality. His unique anatomy, thanks to the Forbidden Jutsu Earth Grudge Fear, allowed him to integrate and sustain up to five separate hearts within his body, each with a different elemental nature. This ability effectively made Kakuzu immortal, as he could replace any destroyed heart with another, which Shikamaru could not have anticipated.

Team 10, lacking this crucial information, assumed that a single well-placed attack from Kakashi’s Lightning Blade would be sufficient to destroy him. This lack of foresight almost led to disaster. Although Kakashi’s strike succeeded in destroying one of Kakuzu’s hearts, incapacitating him for a short period of time, Kakuzu survived the attack and revealed his unique ability, much to the team’s horror.

This was a turning point that exposed the fundamental flaw in Shikamaru’s plan: they had entirely underestimated the resilience and unpredictability of the other opponent as they primarily focused on Hidan. If not for Naruto’s timely arrival later in the battle with a perfected Rasen Shuriken capable of targeting multiple hearts simultaneously, Kakuzu could have easily overpowered and defeated Team 10.

The battle against Hidan and Kakuzu showcases not only Shikamaru’s intelligence but also the dangers of underestimating an opponent in Naruto. Shikamaru’s plan was sound in theory, but his limited information on Kakuzu’s abilities nearly led to a catastrophic failure. Although it was a close call, the battle highlighted the development that each member of Team 10 still needed to go through and reminded us how assumptions without complete information can pose a greater threat by clouding judgment, even a genius like Shikamaru’s.

Naruto is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
