Johnny Depp is a great many things. A fine actor who gets into character every time, Depp found woldwide fame with the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Well, that fame won’t matter to him if he bags the iconic role that Robert Downey Jr. lobbied hard for him to get. Not MCU, but if the reports are true, Johnny Depp could become a part of Sherlock Holmes 3!
Johnny Depp Should Be The Villain in Sherlock Holmes 3
Back in 2009, the world was introduced to Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic Sherlock Holmes in the film of the same name. Starring alongside Jude Law and Guy Ritchie being the director, the film was naturally well received by the audience.
A sequel called Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was released in 2011. However, the film performed a bit poorly. Ever since that year, Sherlock Holmes 3 has been in development hell and fans are waiting for it dearly.
Well, a report by The Enquirer (via IMDb) stated that Johnny Depp could become the next villain in the Sherlock Holmes franchise. Allegedly, a source told the outlet that Robert Downey Jr. had lobbied hard for Depp to become the next villain in the third installment.
Johnny and Robert have a very special 30-year relationship that dates back to both of their days as eccentric Hollywood hell-raisers. If anyone knows what it’s like to beat the odds after being written off, it’s Robert.
The source further continued,
Robert thinks Johnny deserves the same chance to redeem himself that he had.
Note that this report dates back to the time when Depp was going through the infamous Depp-defamation trial. Putting those things aside, the world saw the last of Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in 2011.
With 13 years down the line, the world is still waiting for a third film in the iconic franchise. However, as time passes, peoples hopes and excitement for a third film might start to decrease.
Where is Sherlock Holmes 3?
Even Susan Downey (the wife of Robert Downey Jr.) wants to see Sherlock Holmes 3 happening. 13 years in the waiting, the film has been in development hell for quite a long time.
According to rumors, the film is put on hold because of the changing time schedules that keeps the actors and the director apart. Alongside that, there is a promise to provide the best story possible and perfection takes time.
In 2014, Susan Downey also revealed (via The Things) that she fears that a certain point will come where it’s going to be too late. She’s not wrong.
Yeah. At a certain point it’s going to be too long— we’ve waited too long. We’re working as fast and responsibly as we can to get a great script.
Despite the troubles and conflicts, it seems that the franchise is not going to die so easily. Millions of people will hopefully get to see Downey Jr. reprising the iconic role and possibly, Johnny Depp as the antagonist of that film.
Sherlock Holmes received a rating of 7.6/10 on IMDb and an average of 69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Both Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows are available to rent on AppleTV+ in the U.S.
