The Denver Nuggets faced an unusual situation in their first NBA Cup game of this season, taking the court without two key figures.
Not only was MVP Nikola Jokic absent due to personal matters, but head coach Michael Malone was also missing from his familiar spot on the sidelines.
The reason? A father’s commitment to witness a special moment in his daughter’s life.
Malone stayed in Denver to support his daughter Bridget Malone, a talented senior outside hitter at Mountain Vista High School, as she competed in the state volleyball tournament.
Her athletic prowess has already secured her future, with a commitment to play college volleyball at North Carolina.
Denver assistant coach Davis Adelman shared a heartfelt perspective on Malone’s decision prior to leading the team against the New Orleans Pelicans.
“That’s really cool, and from being a coach’s son and growing up around this, and the things you miss as a dad, really cool that he’s there. That’s something you don’t want to miss. It’s one game. Whatever. That’s really important to her. It’s really important to their family. So I’m glad he’s there,” Adelman said, via Bennett Durando of The Denver Post.
Will Malone be watching Nuggets on his phone from playoff volleyball game? David Adelman: “I hope not. I hope he’s watching his daughter play. That’s really cool, and from being a coach’s son and growing up around this, and the things you miss as a dad, really cool he’s there.”

The timing is noteworthy as Malone stands just one victory shy of matching Doug Moe’s franchise record of 432 regular-season wins.
Malone’s confidence in Adelman’s capabilities likely made his decision easier.
The assistant has already caught the eye of several NBA teams, having interviewed with the Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers during the last round of coaching changes.
