Hungary’s Nations League match against the Netherlands was suspended after a member of their coaching staff collapsed in the dugout.
Staff members rushed to Adam Szalai’s aid after the former Hungary captain and current assistant coach fell to the ground in the seventh minute at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, with a protective shield being formed as he received treatment.
Players were taken off the field by the referee and screens were then erected to block fans from witnessing medics applying treatment to Szalai.
Paramedics were on hand to apply first aid to Szalai, who was carried away on a stretcher and taken to hospital, according to local reports.
It is not yet clear what caused the medical emergency, but the Hungarian Football Association issued a statement to confirm Szalai was “stable and conscious”.
The statement read: “Adam Szalai fell ill in the first minutes of the Netherlands-Hungary match, but his condition is stable and he is conscious. Minutes ago, he was transported by ambulance to an Amsterdam hospital for examination.
After a delay of around 15 minutes, players returned to the pitch to resume the match, only for a VAR review to proceed to review a challenge by defender Willi Orban on Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Spanish referee Jesus Gil reviewed the tackle and awarded a penalty to the Dutch, much to the Hungarians’ unhappiness, and their mood was not improved when Wout Weghorst, the former Manchester United and Burnley striker, scored from the spot and celebrated by sliding on his knees.
