Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers for The Penguin.
Collin Farrell has crafted a Penguin that has managed to deliver a show that is on par with some of the best crime dramas that have come out of Hollywood. The show boasted infinite twists that kept audiences on at the edge of their seats, along with complex characters with understandable motivations, creating a narrative that added another banger of a title to the DC live-action canon.
The show’s finale had some of the most gut-wrenching twists that The Penguin had to offer, chief among them was the death of Victor at the hands of Oswald. While there were a lot of fans who believed that Victor would indeed die, almost nobody thought that Oswald would be so willing to kill his young henchman, especially after all that he had done for him.
The Penguin killing Victor echoed one of The Sopranos‘ most shocking deaths
Christopher Moltisanti had a relationship with Tony Soprano that was analogous to the sort of relationship that Oswald Cobb had with Victor. While Tony killing his own nephew was definitely a twisted resolution to their relationship, Oswald killing Victor is a much more impactful scene, character-wise.
Christopher and Victor had both become devoted to Tony and Oswald respectively, going out of their way to keep the family safe. However, while Tony Soprano was routinely bad to Christopher, Oswald and Victor could have been mistaken as a duo who was genuinely building a bond.
However, when Collin Farrell‘s Oswald decided to kill Victor, the scene played out as more of a shock than what fans had come to expect from The Sopranos, given that Victor, up until that point, had been treated as one of Oswald’s most loyal confidants and his most reliable henchman. The scene just went on to show how ruthless Oswald Cobb was.
The Penguin has cemented itself as one of the best comic book shows
The Penguin managed to bring some very fresh ideas to the superhero genre, which some believed was getting more and more stale with each passing entry. Given the ability that the show had to draw audiences into its story, while also keeping them guessing for what’s to come, the show has distinguished itself as one of the more sophisticated offerings of 2024, while also getting fans excited for The Batman Part II.
The Penguin now sits as one of Gotham’s biggest players, having proved that he is smart, cunning, and ruthless enough to take what’s his no matter what. However, it remains to be seen who The Penguin pits against Batman, given that the character would probably not face The Caped Crusader head-on.
