As per multiple reports, the tragic news of Uma Dasgupta’s demise has been confirmed by her relative, Chiranjeet Chakraborty. The actress passed away around 8 am today. Chakraborty found out about her death when he met Uma’s daughter.
Uma Dasgupta was reportedly under treatment for cancer and was responding well. However, the cancer returned. She was hospitalised in Kolkata and breathed her last at a local hospital.
In Satyajit Ray’s iconic Pather Panchali based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s 1929 Bengali-language novel of the same name, Uma played Apu’s sister Durga. She appears in some of the most memorable scenes that have now been immortalised in cinema history.
Uma acted in a few films after Pather Panchali. She is survived by her daughter.
