Yusei Matsui’s prominent manga series, Assassination Classroom, has been a topic of discussion since the story began in 2012. The series has quite a big fanbase, and the aspect that intrigues its fans the most is the unique storyline that explores the themes of science fiction, comedy, drama, and thrill. However, the uniqueness of the story has become a problem for the series.
Assassination Classroom follows the lives of a bunch of misfit students of Class 3-E who are tasked with killing their teacher. Their teacher is, in fact, an alien with unprecedented powers who has claimed to destroy Earth within one year. But the enticing aspect of the story is that the teacher himself teaches the art of assassination to his students.
While the narrative certainly sounds eccentric, many people are not happy with the different elements of Assassination Classroom. Thus, the series has suffered a ban in the South Carolina School District after a complaint was lodged against the series promoting killing, handguns, knives, etc.
Assassination Classroom Gets Banned in South Carolina
WMBF News recently reported that the Horry County Schools, the school district serving Horry County in South Carolina, has recently confirmed the ban of the Assassination Classroom manga series. The ban comes after a mother complained that the manga has “handguns, rifles, knives, and potions” and that the story “talks about killing in the pages.”
She even pointed out that “there’s girls in lingerie hopping on top of men in the book.” The most concerning thing, according to her, however, was the fact that the students in the series discuss the plans on how to kill their teacher. While this is not the goal of the story, it certainly provides the wrong idea to the children as Assassination Classroom is part of the Shonen genre.
The books were temporarily removed from libraries in October as they underwent review by the District Reconsideration Committee, which was formed to assess the contents of this book in accordance with District Policies. After the review, it was recommended that the book should be removed and the ban will not be challenged for the next five years.
This is Not The First Ban For Assassination Classroom
Assassination Classroom is probably the most banned manga within America. The series’ narrative is quite controversial, and many states have taken strict actions against it. This has deemed Assassination Classroom as one of the most contentious anime and manga series in America.
Last year, Anime News Network reported that the series was removed from the libraries of Gifford Middle School in eastern Florida. The reason for the removal was similar to the recent ban. Simultaneously, it suffered another ban from the Elmbrook School District in southeastern Wisconsin. It was also challenged in Pender County, North Carolina.
The controversial nature of Assassination Classroom’s storyline has become the biggest problem for the series. However, the series is not the only one that has suffered these bans. There are many other manga stories like Death Note, My Hero Academia, Black Butler, Spy x Family, etc. that have gone through similar issues in the U.S.
Assassination Classroom is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
