Eva Longoria, one of the finest talents in all of Hollywood credited with bringing masterpieces like Desperate Housewives, Land of Women, and Dora and the Lost City of Gold to the table, is once again making headlines. As stunning as she is even at the age of 49, the actress-cum-producer-cum-director is gaining attention this time around over her personal views.
Apparently, recent reports had it that the Only Murders in the Building actress has reportedly left the country following the re-election of Republican candidate Donald Trump as the next president of the United States of America. These stemmed from the comments Longoria made herself about having moved her family out of the country, seeing it as a closed chapter of her life.
However, it seems like the 49-year-old stunner’s words were seemingly taken out of context, as she later clarified herself, explaining that Trump, most certainly, wasn’t the primary reason for her leaving the country. While she did express dissatisfaction with the people choosing the Republican over the Democrat she has stood as such a die-hard supporter of, she reportedly didn’t leave the USA because of Trump’s win or anything related whatsoever.
That being said, here’s all you need to know about the pro-Kamala Harris supporter’s decision to move herself and her family out of the United States of America along with all the comments she made on the matter – both the old and suspicion-raising ones and the more recent and clarifying ones. Dig in.
Eva Longoria DID NOT Leave the USA Because of Donald Trump
Recently on The View: Behind the Table podcast, co-host Ana Navarro received an unexpected call from actress cum producer Eva Longoria that cleared the air about all the reports of her leaving the US because of Donald Trump. On the call, Longoria said loud and clear, “Will you please let them know I didn’t move out to Spain because of [Donald] Trump.”
Currently, the Devious Maids star’s family is splitting their time between Mexico and Spain, and she reportedly “had moved before Trump” even got re-elected following the 2024 election results declared earlier this month. Explaining the entire situation and how some words from her comments were taken out of context, Longoria confessed (via @TheView on X):
I’ve been in Europe working for almost three years. By the way, the [Marie Claire] article says that. People just grabbed some clickbait stuff to be divisive, which makes me so sad, you know. Everything you say is just meant to be divisive when we can’t be that way right now.
Adding to this, Navarro pointed out, “But you did tell me that living in Europe had been like shutting off the noise.” To this, Longoria agreed, saying, “Yeah, I mean being away from the constant 24-hour news cycle puts you in a bit of a bubble, for sure. That’s why I’m in Europe. I didn’t leave because of the political environment. I left because my work took me there.”
All of this being said, it’s unarguable that the real reason that the Over Her Dead Body actress claims to have left the U.S. is because her work compelled her to do so. At the same time, the comments she made previously about Donald Trump‘s win and moving out of the country are worth nothing, considering how they ignited this rumor fire in the first place.
Eva Longoria Previously Opened Up About Moving Her Family Out of the U.S.
Following Trump’s presidential win, Longoria revealed in an interview with Marie Claire how she and her family, which includes her husband José Bastón and their son Santiago, 6, are currently split between Spain and Mexico as a result of years of her spending most of her time outside of Hollywood. Coming clean about it all, she said,
I had my whole adult life here. But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to sh-t on California—it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.
Adding to this, she also talked about Trump’s getting re-elected as the president of America. “I would like to think our fight continues,” she said even though she herself couldn’t pretend she knew what was coming next. Continuing to call the country “a scary place,” she went on to say about Trump: “If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place.”
That’s not all. While that was that, Longoria further expressed her shock at the 45th U.S. president once again managing to bag the position. Two days after the race was called for Trump, she candidly confessed to Marie Claire her feelings on the entire scenario: “The shocking part is not that he won. It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.”
That said, these were the very statements that had pretty much everyone under the influence that Eva Longoria had seemingly left the country after Trump gained victory in the presidential elections. However, as the stunner clarified herself, this speculation couldn’t have been further from the truth, so even with all these statements, that’s that as well.
Eva Longoria Was One of the Biggest Supporters of Kamala Harris
While all the previous efforts she had been investing in her support for the Democrats was one thing, these recent elections saw Longoria quite literally seem like the biggest supporter of Kamala Harris. Among all the countless celebrities who endorsed her, she spent the better part of summer campaigning and rallying volunteers for the Harris-Walz ticket.
Per Marie Claire, on the one hand, while The Washington Post has called the Flamin’ Hot director a genuine “political power broker” for the “fierce and productive” work she has done to organize women and Latinos, The Texas Tribune, on the other, profiled her efforts to draft and support the Hispanic Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.
On the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, she even referenced former President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign slogan ‘Si, se puede!’ while modifying it to her own iteration, saying, “In our community, we have a saying: ‘Si, se puede!’ which means, ‘Yes, we can.’ But tonight, I’m here to tell you, ‘Yes, she can,’ so we’re gonna say, ‘She se puede.’”
To say the least, Longoria was arguably one of the most die-hard supporters of both Kamala Harris as well as Tim Walz, so the surprising results of the elections must have ostensibly left her stunned like many others. Even then, it all may not have stung as deeply as it did back in 2016 when Donald Trump claimed office for the first time.
Donald Trump’s Win in 2016 Had Eva Longoria Depressed As Well
If depression over one failing when they had all hopes of winning was real, then that was exactly what caught hold of Eva Longoria back in 2016 when Donald Trump prevailed for the first time in the U.S. presidential elections. Not only did she take to her bed with bodily anguish after Trump’s win, but she also felt serious doubt about convictions that had once felt undeniable.
Recalling her reaction to it all back then, she told Marie Claire, “I’ve never been depressed in my life. It was like, ‘Does my vote really matter? Am I really making a difference?’ I was so untethered to the core of what I believed because I truly believed in my soul that the best person wins. And then that happened, and I was like, ‘Oh, wait. The best person doesn’t win.’”
Eva Longoria Called America a “Dystopian Country”
If her claiming that the chapter of her life in America, which was marred by ‘homelessness’ and ‘taxes’ and had her feeling like ‘this chapter in my life is done now,’ was what ignited speculation that she had left the country due to Trump’s triumphant win, what further added fuel to the fire was Longoria’s comment where she unhesitantly termed America a dystopian country.
During the same interview with Marie Claire, she claimed the same in her later comment on the political situation in the United States of America and her take on it, saying, “I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”
Nonetheless, despite her primary address changing, it didn’t strip her of her patriot title completely; her family has spent their lifetime in Texas for nine stunning generations. As Marie Claire put it, ‘America might be battered, but Longoria knows intimately that you can be disappointed in something and still believe in it. She works in the entertainment industry.’
