After 21 years, Disney is finally rolling the ball on the Freaky Friday sequel, which is set to see the many returning faces from the original cast, including Mark Harmon and Jamie Lee Curtis. While Harmon is mostly notable for his feats on the small screen, especially his years-long stint on NCIS, the original Freaky Friday remains his highest-grossing big-screen release to date.
Although sequels, especially the ones that come out years after the original, often drop the ball heavily in terms of quality, the True Lies star once assured fans that she wouldn’t return for Freaky Friday 2 if it wasn’t good.
Jamie Lee Curtis Wanted To Make Freakier Friday for the Fans
Before the sequel was officially announced, which is slated to hit theatres next year, Jamie Lee Curtis was certain (via Variety) that a sequel “is going to happen”. The actress reiterated her enthusiasm regarding a potential sequel, alongside her costar Lindsay Lohan, on the 20th anniversary of the original, which scored $160M at the box office during its debut.
However, Lindsay Lohan did stress one condition, adding (via The New York Times) that the two would only be open to reprising their roles if the movie was something that fans “would absolutely adore”.
Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.
In addition to the mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna, other returning characters include Mark Harmon‘s Ryan and Chad Michael Murray’s Jake. Moreover, instead of Mark Waters, who helmed the original, Nisha Ganatra, notable for directing Dakota Johnson’s The High Note, will steer the ship of the sequel, which is apparently more emotional than the original.
Lindsay Lohan Deemed Freakier Friday More Emotional and Fun
Speaking of the sequel, titled Freakier Friday, Lohan expressed that the sequel will double down on the emotional core of the first one, adding (via Deadline) it’s “more fun, it’s more emotional, and it’s all for you guys”. Later taking to her IG, Curtis expressed gratitude towards Lohan “without whom we could not have made this movie”.
The Emmy winner further shared that the last stretch of the production was emotional for the actress, which is reasonable given her passion for the IP.
While time will tell if the sequel can successfully replicate the original’s charm or not, given that most of the original cast are returning for Freakier Friday, hopefully, it’ll be more than just a cash grab from Disney.
Freakier Friday will hit theatres on 8 August 2025.
