Jude Law and Robert Downeny Jr. first met on the sets of 2009’s Sherlock Holmes. While everyone loved their epic on-screen chemistry as the enigmatic investigator and the intelligent and modest doctor, behind the scenes, both actors got along well, as seen in their many interviews.
Hence, it is natural that fans want them to reunite on the big screen, possibly in the MCU. But the chances of that are way less than them reuniting in the potential Sherlock Holmes 3.
Jude Law Might Reunite with Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes 3
Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. starred as two of the most fan-favorite fictional characters from the detective genre: Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes, respectively, in the two Sherlock Holmes movies. While the last film was released in 2011, a threequel has been said to be in the works for a long time.
Despite everyone attached to the franchise having remarked that a third part is in the works, the plans have never materialized. Yet, in a recent interview, Law was the latest of them all to give a positive update. While talking to The Playlist, he remarked,
The plan has been evolving over how many years it’s been now, probably nearly ten years… I think there’s a new iteration of the script I haven’t yet read. And then there’s a case of ‘How expensive is it? And can we get it made?’
Stating that his friendship with Downey and Susan is the driving factor in trying to get the third film into action, Law remarked that working with fellow Marvel star was an incredibly rewarding experience. He also added that there is hope that they will return with a third Sherlock Holmes movie despite the many challenges it has been facing.
Will Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. Ever Meet in the MCU?
Jude Law made his Marvel debut when he starred as Yon-Rogg, a Kree Empire commander in the 2019 flick Captain Marvel. His portrayal of the evil and devout follower of the Supreme Intelligence was well-received and he returned to voice Yon-Rogg in the animated series, What If…?
Since his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many fans have wondered if his path will ever cross with Robert Downey Jr. While Law, during his interview with The Playlist, did not remark on the situation, he did reveal he is in contract with one of the franchises (Marvel or Star Wars) but doesn’t remember which one.
Again, I have no idea. I can’t even remember what I contractually owe to anyone [laughs]. If there’s a contract, it’s up to them. If they make the call, you gotta go, ‘OK, I’m here.’ But I can’t remember who I am beholden to, and again, the ball is always in their court. I’m just a player.
Since Downey is now Dr. Doom and there is a possibility that Yon Rogg might return, fans hope that the two friends will get to meet on-screen in the MCU. But given that the chances of this happening are much lower, we have our fingers crossed, hoping that the long-in-development Sherlock Holmes 3 finally takes place sometime soon.
