The Dune franchise started its comeback strong. Timothée Chalamet was perfect in his role; glimpses of Zendaya were enough for fans to come back. Having a cast full of some of the best that Hollywood has to offer with Denis Villeneuve by their side, there were few they could not conquer. Although the two films lived up to every bit of hype that the books got, the release schedule was slow, making many long for more.
While fans did not mind waiting a few years to see masterpieces, they were gifted with the news of a spin-off series. Set 10,000 years before the story of Paul Atreides, fans were more than a little excited to see Dune: Prophecy, waiting months since its trailer was released.
However, now that its first episode has come out, fans are nothing but disappointed with what the series has to show.
Dune: Prophecy and Disappointing Openings
When one is making a series following greatness, it is very important to have a strong opening. The Dune franchise was a masterpiece, and its most recent addition managed to continue the quality of the first. The films, on their own, had a lot of expectations with the impact that Frank Herbert’s works had.
With this in mind, when it was announced that a spin-off series would be coming around, fans took the news with a grain of salt and waited for what it had to offer. While this was the case, expectations were already made towards Dune: Prophecy. The first episode of the series was released yesterday, and it has proven to be quite a disappointment for fans.
Many of its viewers had a discussion about the same on Reddit, and the opinions they had to offer weren’t promising.
The Real Prophet of the Dune Franchise
Even though only one episode of Dune: Prophecy has been released as of yet, the series has managed to put out a very disappointing opening. Fans had many concerns with it. Starting off, many pointed out that compared to the big-scale productions of the films from the franchise, the series feels quite cheap.
While shows are allowed to have smaller budgets, many pointed out that the sets and general atmosphere of the series feel very fake, causing them to be taken out of the series and its story. Speaking on its plot, many pointed out that the dialogue seems modern in the worst way possible.
Although the cast of the series is immaculate and it follows a very interesting aspect of the Dune universe, the actors are not able to compensate for the poor writing. Considering how only one episode has come out from the series, one can only imagine how fans are going to feel about the rest of the episodes.
It is important to note that Denis Villeneuve had no involvement in this series, even though he headed the two films from the franchise. With this in mind, one cannot help but wonder if his touch is what the franchise needs to make its stories work.
Dune: Prophecy is available for streaming on Max.
