Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise met on the sets of the film, Days of Thunder, in 1989 and got married in 1990. The high-profile relationship caught many eyes at the time and the couple adopted two children, born in 1992 and 1995. However, things didn’t work out between the couple and they announced their separation in 2001. Interestingly, Kidman’s career was at an all-time high at this time.
Kidman was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar in 2002 and she went on to win the award in 2003. However, she revealed that she was devastated after receiving the award as she had finalized her divorce with Cruise the same year. After Her Oscar Win, Nicole Kidman Realized That She Needed A Love In Her Life
Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress for playing the role of Virginia Wolf in the 2002 film, The Hours. A year before that, she was nominated for her role in Moulin Rouge!. It was definitely a career-best time for the actress but she revealed that she couldn’t enjoy it due to her divorce from Tom Cruise at the time.
In Dave Krager’s book 50 Oscar Nights, Kidman opened up about her struggles in her personal life when she won the Oscar for The Hours. She shared, “I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well” (via In Style). Kidman shared that she was in no mood to attend Vanity Fair’s Oscar afterparty at the time, but she was convinced by everyone to go.
She shared that she didn’t want to walk through the party carrying the award. The Babygirl actress shared, “That just feels like gloating, and it doesn’t feel humble.” However, others convinced her that it was something all winners do. When she attended the party, Kidman shared that she was overwhelmed by the celebrations, especially considering her sad circumstances. She shared:
So I literally walked in, carried it around, was completely overwhelmed, emotional, shaking, and I didn’t enjoy it. I was almost apologetic, which is so stupid. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.
Kidman further shared that she went home and ordered takeout, spending her time with her family in the Beverly Hills Hotel. She shared that it was at this moment that she realized that she needed love in her life. Kidman shared that she wanted to share her award with someone she loved. She shared:
I went home and ended up ordering takeout and eating it on the floor of the Beverly Hills Hotel. I sat on the floor of the hotel eating French fries and a burger with my family and went to bed. That’s when it hit me. I went, I need to find my love; I need a love in my life. Because this is supposed to be when you go, ‘This is ours.’
Kidman also added that she went to bed before midnight after winning the best accolade of her life. She swore that if she were to win another Oscar, she would be out for 24 hours.

Nicole Kidman started dating Lenny Kravitz in 2003. During a 2007 interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed that she had been secretly engaged to someone. It was later revealed that it was Kravitz and they eventually decided to call off their engagement (via Today). She also briefly dated rapper Q-Tip in 2003.
In 2005, she met her now-husband Keith Urban. The country singer married the Perfect Couple actress in June 2006. During a 2015 interview with The Daily Telegraph, Kidman revealed that divorcing Cruise was the best thing that happened to her. She shared that she had a great relationship with Urban, sharing, “We didn’t really know each other – we got to know each other during our marriage.”
Urban credited her with helping him overcome his struggles with alcohol addiction. The couple’s first daughter was born in 2008 and they welcomed their second daughter in 2010.
