Triple-A games get much of the attention when it comes to games media, but there’s a varied and enchanting world of indie games that deserves just as much love. indie.io is a publishing platform that specializes in indie titles, and we’ve checked out their latest releases to find the best picks right now.
Beyond publishing unique and imaginative indie games, indie.io provides valuable support to independent developers, working with teams of all sizes to bring their projects to life and share them with players around the world. With so much to choose from, we’ve picked out four of our latest indie.io favorites, some of which you can find in their latest sale. From a cozy farming sim to a challenging soccer game and a chaotic, bullet-hell roguelike, there’s sure to be something you’ll love.
Everholm
If you’re struggling to find your next adventure among myriad cozy farming sims, we recommend the sweet story and style of Everholm. While many games like Stardew Valley encompass your relationships with neighbors, Everholm weaves these connections into a larger, open-ended story in which your fellow residents play a key role.
As Lilly, you find yourself in Everholm searching for your missing sister, and only by getting to know the local Everfolk can you unravel the secrets of the titular town and, hopefully, your sister’s whereabouts. Naturally, the rest of this charming life sim consists of the familiar farming, fishing, and gathering. Explore deeper into the island, though, and you’ll discover dark dungeons packed with valuable resources but crawling with terrifying monsters that only magic and skill can defeat. With its mix of heartfelt storytelling, charming farming-sim mechanics, and thrilling dungeon exploration, Everholm offers a unique adventure that’s as cozy as it is captivating.
Asterogues
In contrast to the soothing farm life of Everholm, Asterogues is a frenetic bullet-hell roguelite that’s out of this world. Literally. Pick your player from a range of cute but weird extraterrestrial misfits on a mission to seek revenge on the sun. Having been cast aside by the solar body itself, our Asterogues must defeat the planets standing between them and retribution, using their unique powers and any weapons found along the way.
Inspired by the legacy of roguelite classics, Asterogues brings its own super fun, action-packed combat and relentless challenges to the genre.
Each planet has its own look and cast of enemies, but they each boast the same chaotic onslaught of never-ending attacks. You won’t succeed in Asterogues right away. You’ll be overwhelmed and you’ll be challenged. Asterogues demands patience, skill, and adaptability as you master your own abilities and memorize enemy attacks to turn their bullets on themselves.
Having spent a successful period in early access, Asterogues in now ready for its full release, which adds that final boss fight with the sun itself, new Asterogues and recruits to add to your party, a full new zone, and much more.
You can also find Asterogues as part of the appealing and aptly-named Try and Try Again Collection, where you can try some of the most intensely difficult rhythm games, roguelites, and beat ‘em ups that’ll have you cursing the ‘Game Over’ screen as you start up just one more attempt.
World of Football
Newly launched into early access, World of Football is nothing like the popular soccer games you might have experienced before, not only providing a more realistic soccer experience, but a more enjoyable and varied challenge, too.
In World of Football, your team of players become pucks. Still outfitted in your team’s kit, you don’t have to worry about those gangly human limbs and can instead focus on the crucial physics of the ball. In fact, this multiplayer game is so set on realism that changing seasons and weather affect how the game plays out, just like it would in real life, impacting not only how the ball and players move, but how you consider your next move.
There’s loads of content for every soccer fan even in early access, from solo offline play to casual team co-op and competitive online multiplayer. You can also try futsal or street football, too, with a jam-packed roadmap of new content planned for the early access period and beyond. Easy to learn but tough to master, World of Football also offers training sessions to perfect your ball-handling skills before heading out onto the pitch for the main event. Lace up your cleats, get practicing, and make your way through the leagues.
G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra
What’s better than a bit of classic nostalgia? Whether you were around for the first run of G.I. Toys in the ‘60s, look back fondly on the animated series of the ‘80s and ‘90s, or have picked the franchise up more recently, this one’s for you. G.I Joe: Wrath of Cobra features the universe’s most beloved characters and combines them with the retro, side-scrolling gameplay of classic arcade games for a double dose of sentimentality.
Pit Duke, Scarlett, Roadblock, Snake Eyes, and more against their enemies at Cobra as you punch, kick, and shoot your way through iconic 2D levels. Accompanying you is a joyous soundtrack of G.I Joe themes rebooted with an arcade game sound. Already a firm favorite on PC, G.I Joe: Wrath of Cobra is coming soon to consoles as well, perhaps an even more fitting home for the arcade-style game, and definitely one to look out for.
With such a fun variety of indie games to choose from, we apologize in advance for the time you’re going to lose – but, trust us, it’s worth it. Plus, what’s not to love about filling up your library with some hot new bargains while you have the chance? Sure, it’ll leave you with the tough decision about which of indie.io‘s games to choose, but that’s all part of the fun.
