How Gardening Brought Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani Closer Together

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani didn’t think they had a lot in common when they first met other than being music artists. However, the pair found themselves bonding even more doing things Stefani might’ve never thought she’d be interested in.

Shelton and Stefani found a new hobby as a couple. Both became more in touch with nature by picking up gardening, which was a completely new experience to Stefani. Unlike Shelton, who was born and raised in Ada, Oklahoma, Stefani spent a good chunk of her life in California. But although Stefani was out of her element, she quickly adjusted to living in her husband’s home state.

“I am not really a dirt person, a bug person, I don’t like that much humidity,” Stefani once told People. “But you sort of get over it all because it’s so beautiful [in Oklahoma], and you kind of feel like you’re going into this vortex and it’s just different here … I guess it’s just nature, and God, is all right there.”

While in Oklahoma, Stefani also surprised herself by becoming a gardener alongside her husband. Which was a gig she didn’t see herself getting into in the past.

“When I was young, I’d walk home from school and see my mom in her shorts doing her gardening, and my dad would be cutting the trees and make me pick up the branches. I’d be like, ‘I’m never having a tree at my house,’” she recalled.

But Stefani’s newfound passion for gardening helped her understand her mom a little better.

“When we get to Oklahoma, we’re constantly working — and it’s a different kind of work. It’s probably what my mom was doing back in the day, and now I get it,” she said.

Nowadays, Stefani even credited gardening for bringing the two that much closer together. So much so that her new exploits have even inspired her music.

“I know this sounds weird, but Blake and I came together in gardening,” she told The Guardian. “We have a house together in Oklahoma and during the pandemic we came across this very old building on the land and there were some purple irises, which someone must have planted centuries ago, but they’ve survived. I wrote the song Purple Irises about that and how it feels to find true love and the insecurities of not wanting to lose it.”

Gwen Stefani compared her relationship with Blake Shelton to gardening

It seemed that even when Stefani wasn’t home, she made sure that her and Shelton’s garden was being tended to. Speaking on The Ellen Show, Stefani explored her newfound love for nature with the talk show host in detail. While Stefani was out and about promoting her beauty line at the time, she put the “God Gave Me You” singer to work on their yard.

“I sent him home to figure out how to till all the land and dig a well. So, it’s gonna be good,” Stefani said. “He’s working on the well digging today.”

After gardening so long, Stefani noticed some unique similarities between her new hobby and building a relationship.

“I think about all the different seeds that were planted in my life. The seeds of faith. The seeds of … these wild ideas I had that actually came true. Even the one to fall in love with Blake,” Stefani said. “There’s just so much relevance between the two things, if you think about it.”

But as much as Shelton loved gardening, he admitted they could be a little extreme when it came to their work. Thanks to their combined massive net worth, Shelton and Stefani have been able to invest a fortune in this hobby of theirs.

“We go way over-the-top,” he told People.

“It’s embarrassing how much we spend on seeds,” Shelton added. Besides music, gardening has been our biggest bonding activity,” he said.
