In the ’90s and 2000s, teens anticipated Sister, Sister every Friday night, tuning into ABC‘s TGIF lineup by the millions. One of the most iconic sitcoms of its time, Sister, Sister warmed viewers’ hearts for five years before its conclusion, igniting a Tia and Tamera Mowry fandom that exists to this day. Recently, Tia reunited with her onscreen mom, Jackée Harry, motivating fans to see how far they’ve come and what’s changed in the 30 years since Sister, Sister‘s premiere.
‘Sister, Sister’ played a pivotal role in ABC’s TGIF lineup
Sister, Sister debuted in 1994 and followed the lives of twin sisters Tia Landry (Tia Mowry) and Tamera Campbell (Tamera Mowry), separated at birth and reunited as teens. Conceived by Kim Bass, the show’s relatable characters explored the themes of family and identity. Sister, Sister first aired on ABC before moving to The WB. The show earned many honors, including NAACP Image Awards and Kids Choice Awards’ Favorite TV Actresses. Despite its popularity, Sister, Sister ended in 1999 after six seasons due to network shifts.
Where are ‘Sister, Sister’ stars Tia Mowry and Jackée Harry now?
Thirty years after Sister, Sister‘s premiere, Tia Mowry and Jackée Harry reunited on the red carpet. The pair celebrated the Lifetime Movie Club’s lineup of 70 holiday movies, aptly named It’s a Wonderful Lifetime Holiday! Lifetime movie stars like Vivica A. Fox, Haley Kalil, Jeannie Mai, Romeo Miller, Teri Hatcher, and Deborah Joy Winans gathered for the Christmas-themed party. Naturally, Tia and Harry, both Lifetime movie veterans, attended, too.
Harry has become a Lifetime movie mainstay since starring in Sister, Sister. Since 2020 specifically, the 68-year-old has appeared in 10 Lifetime movies, including The Wrong Wedding Planner, A Christmas for Mary, Deceived by My Mother-in-Law, Mommy’s Deadly Con Artist, The Wrong Cheer Captain, Every Breath She Takes, Killer Design, As Luck Would Have It, A Christmas Intern, and The Wrong Life Coach. Her former co-star, Tia, has starred in two Lifetime movies: 2021’s Miracle in Motor City and 2023’s Yes, Chef! Christmas.
Fans have witnessed Tia Mowry reunite with her former onscreen mom several times since Sister, Sister. The duo remain close friends. Harry even appeared in Tia Mowry: My Next Act, the We TV reality series starring Tia. The 2024 show follows a newly single Tia navigating motherhood and show business. She receives advice from friends, including Harry, along the way.
During the series’ first season, Harry weighed in on Tia’s divorce. She gave the 46-year-old some advice, tearfully saying, according to Yahoo, “I had it all, but you can’t have it all, all the time. Somebody’s gotta stay home with the kids or nurture the ego of the man. Do I sound bitter?”
The ‘Sister, Sister’ gets canned
In addition to their regular hangouts in front of and away from the camera, the pair starred in a special Mother’s Day episode of Nick at Nite’s Instant Mom in 2024. Previously, Tia and Tamera were floating the idea of a Sister, Sister reboot. In 2012, the identical twins revealed they were in talks regarding a “twins in the city” storyline.
By 2018, Harry appeared on Steve, telling talk show host Steve Harvey that “it’s happening.” Sadly, by 2019, the reboot was put on hold due to copyright issues with Tia explaining, “To be honest with you, I hate to pop the balloon. [A revival of] Sister, Sister kind of looks dead right now.” (via Fandom). For now, fans will have to settle for occasional reunions between Harry and the Mowry sisters.
