The Boston Celtics savored one final celebration of their championship triumph during their White House visit.

As the team basked in the moment with President Joe Biden, discussions turned to the possible sale of the franchise, and owner Wyc Grousbeck offered a brief glimpse into the process.

“I don’t have any comments on the sale process that’s underway. There’s a lot of interest. That’s one comment, I guess. The plan is that I will stay for three more years. That’s what’s made out and then we’ll go from there,” Grousbeck said, via Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

The Celtics stunned the basketball world when they announced their availability for purchase, fresh off securing the 2024 championship.

While updates have been limited, the considerable interest in acquiring one of basketball’s most storied franchises comes as no surprise.

Grousbeck maintained his commitment to a three-year transition period as governor, consistent with the initial sale announcement.

He then pivoted the conversation toward the current squad’s potential for another championship run.

The journey began in 2002 when Grousbeck spearheaded the acquisition of the Celtics for $360 million.

Since then, the franchise has evolved into a powerhouse brand in professional sports, collecting two more championships and experiencing a remarkable surge in value that mirrors the broader trend across the NBA.

While the owner has kept private the personal considerations driving his gradual exit from basketball operations, his timeline suggests that 2028 will mark the end of an era.
