Faith is a tricky subject and it gets even trickier when talked about in a public platform. Many actors have shied away from discussing religion publicly in order to not alienate any of their fan bases, but not Denzel Washington.
The Gladiator IIÂ star has been vocal about his faith and the impact religion had on his personal life and career for a long time now. Washington emphasized curating a strong bond with the heavenly being on several occasions but his recent statement might hurt some sentiments. The Malcolm X actor said that people in Hollywood did not like talking about religion and his views burned a lot of bridges. Atheists may not like to hear this, but according to the actor religious stars did not earn major accolades.
Religion can keep actors from receiving Oscars?
Denzel Washington initially started his career with a bang in theatre and Broadway shows. His performance in Edward Zwick’s directorial war drama film, Glory and David Ayer written thriller, Training Day, garnered substantial praise and two Academy Awards.
But the actor is also renowned for his bold support and high praise for religion. The Cry Freedom actor has repeatedly spoken about his strong Christian faith and even mentioned a supernatural incident when he saw God (via @FearedBuck on X).
Attributing his success in both his personal and professional life to his special connection with the Almighty, he has never shied away from the topic of religion. However, his recent confession about the same might be a tough pill to swallow for non-believers.
Speaking in his newest cover for Esquire, the Gladiator IIÂ actor stated that the topic of religion was tip-toed around in the industry. He claimed most of the actors did not like opening up about their faith since it did not have good consequences for their careers.
Although, according to the actor, religion was not cool or viable in the industry, that never seemed to affect him. Washington has always been the flag-bearer of following one’s instincts and forming a natural connection with God but he’s not the only one.
Not everyone is scared of talking about religion
The Inside Man actor may think that everyone in Hollywood fears talking about faith but some actors may prove him wrong. The Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt talks about his faith regularly via his social media posts (via Buzzfeed).
Another famous TV personality, Mayim Bialik has also spoken about her Jewish upbringing and her religious belief. The Big Bang Theory star confessed that she was an aspiring Modern Orthodox (via The Jerusalem Post).
West Wing actor Martin Sheen has also been vocal about his journey as a practicing Catholic. Although Sheen’s path was not as sturdy as the Fences actor, as he had briefly left the faith due to some differences. Later on, it was director Terrence Malick who inspired him to practice again (via Sojourners).
Mark Wahlberg has also preached about his faith and diligence towards Catholicism. The Uncharted actor may start his days with prayers but also confessed that he never pushed his children in that direction unless it came from their hearts (via Today.com).
There might be some exceptions to Washington’s statement about religion in Hollywood, but the actor stands by his belief. Though his words might sound cruel to some, the Man on Fire actor has spoken unabashedly.
Gladiator II is currently available to watch in theatres.
