It’s strange to think more than a year has passed since the Baldur’s Gate 3 launch helped tactical RPGs become the hottest genre in town. The medieval fantasy game sees you leading a band of mercenaries on adventures across a vast open world in search of riches, bounties, and mysterious secrets. As it celebrates a massive milestone, developer Shiro Games reveals a brand-new and brutal DLC, arriving in just a few weeks alongside a free update for all.
In the wake of news that Wartales sales have passed the one million mark, Shiro Games reveals its next DLC, which it calls its “bloodiest to date.” The Skelmar Invasion takes the tactical RPG to Ormance, a country that has just been overrun by the eponymous Skelmar horde, a gathering of clans united for the first time under the banner of the cruel High Jarl Sven. With the country’s last stronghold fallen and its people scattered, it’s up to you to rescue the Countess, save its surviving soldiers, and drive back the Skelmars.
Moving from barony to barony, you’ll find the lands ravaged and burned by the brutality of the warmongering Skelmar forces. Succeed in driving them out of their strongholds, and you’ll be able to bring life back to each region. Spurred by your efforts, allies will begin to come out of hiding and help you to rebuild the destroyed towns, helping you to strengthen your war effort against the invaders.
Once you’ve liberated a zone, you can recruit local factions for various benefits. Some will provide valuable resources, while others might increase production or offer military support. Managing your manpower, materials, and supplies, you’ll gradually ramp up your network of resistance troops as you gradually reclaim Ormance for its peoples. At the climax of each region are stronghold siege battles, where you must rally your forces and weaponry to breach the defences, penetrating into the heart of each Skelmar fortress and eliminating the region’s leader.
Alongside this new DLC, Shiro Games is delivering a free update that will introduce a new crossbowman class for all players. Be warned, however – you aren’t the only one able to pick up these new weapons, so keep watch for crossbow-wielding enemies that can appear in any of the game’s antagonistic factions.
New Wartales DLC The Skelmar Invasion releases Tuesday December 10, priced at $19.99 / £16.99, with a bonus 10% discount available for the first two weeks.
