The New England Patriots weren’t expected to be competitive this season.
Then again, there are many ways to lose.
Drake Maye has looked the part, and there are reasons to be encouraged about him and his growth.
As for Jerod Mayo, there have been some mixed reviews about the first-year coach.
The Patriots always intended Mayo to be Bill Belichick’s heir, and after watching Dan Campbell with the Detroit Lions, they surely hoped to have a similar situation there.
However, his clock and timeout management and overall decision-making have left plenty to be desired.
That’s why Adam Schefter believes that loss to the Miami Dolphins might make Robert Kraft reconsider his stance on Mayo.
Talking on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the renowned insider stated that the Patriots looked uninspired, and that’s the kind of loss that usually makes owners change their plans.
“That was a bad loss yesterday in Miami and they look uninspired..
We’ll see how the Patriots play down the stretch and if Robert Kraft will change his thinking in any way” ~ @AdamSchefter #PMSLive https://t.co/C0Wx7Zs3Bl pic.twitter.com/WiZ7eG38hI

Mayo has also made some rather interesting comments about his team and his players throughout the season, and they may not have rubbed some people the right way.
The Patriots are still a ways away from being a competitive team.
They must add plenty of talent to fix the talent-less roster they inherited from Bill Belichick.
Still, there have been reasons to doubt whether Mayo was ready to be the main guy or at least the guy they need right now.
With options like Mike Vrabel potentially becoming available, the Patriots would be wise to at least touch base with their former player.
