Ed Sheeran has apologised to Ruben Amorim for gatecrashing his post-match interview after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town.

United’s new head coach was being interviewed on Sky Sports when Sheeran cut in to talk to Jamie Redknapp, who was on air as a pundit.

Having been criticised for the incident on social media, Sheeran posted on Instagram to apologise to the Portuguese manager and say he felt like a “b—end”.

Amorim, after taking charge of United for the first time, was being interviewed by Kelly Cates, Roy Keane, Izzy Christiansen and former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp at Portman Road.

As they discussed the game, singer-songwriter Sheeran, who is a minority owner at Ipswich, interrupted the pitchside interview to greet Redknapp. Referring to Amorim, Sheeran said: “I don’t think he wants to speak to me.” He added: “I love being back in the Premier League.”

On Monday, Sheeran wrote: “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday. Didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time. Was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie. [Obviously] feel a bit of a b—end but life goes on. Great game though, congrats on all involved x.”

Sheeran became Ipswich’s main shirt sponsor in 2021 and bought a minority stake in the club this summer after they secured promotion from the Championship.

Marcus Rashford had opened the scoring for United in the second minute but Omari Hutchinson’s 43rd-minute equaliser earned Ipswich a point.

Post-match analysis proved eventful for the Sky Sports team, with Roy Keane also telling an Ipswich fan to “wait in the car park” for him as he bit back at heavy abuse.

The exchange across a touchline barrier took place just moments before he went back on air and prompted more jeers for the former United captain, who managed Ipswich between 2009 and 2011.

Amorim’s first game at Old Trafford, meanwhile, comes against FK Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday.
