‘I’ll be giving my brother a heavenly hug’

Recently, the realms of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, John Wick, and Resident Evil faced a head-on collision when the premature, tragic death of actor Lance Reddick sent the industry into a tailspin. Fans and former co-stars came together to express their collective grief and heartbreak.

Now, as the dust settles and the industry gets back in motion, projects that actively involve Reddick’s participation are stuck in a dilemma. Recasting the actor seems disrespectful of his memory and legacy and reproducing his scenes and dialogues through AI could lead to a mutiny.

However, the gears of the entertainment industry need to keep turning and Law & Order provided the necessary solution to Disney’s particular problem.

Rick Riordan’s fantasy adventure inspired by Greek mythology has been an immense hit among teenagers and young adults through the decades. The impact and influence of the Percy Jackson novels reached so far and wide that Hollywood could not ignore the potential commercial worth of the novels any longer.

However, after the initial disappointment of the flopped 2010 film adaptation, the studios stalled any attempts at further pursuing the literary series for over a decade. In 2023, the series reboot starring Walker Scobell seemed to be a timely arrival as the project immediately became a hit among fans and critics. But tragedy struck with the passing of Lance Reddick who played Zeus in Season 1.

Now, as the crew prepares for Season 2, Variety announces the casting of Law & Order veteran Courtney B. Vance as Zeus, replacing Reddick in the role. In an exclusive statement to the publication, Vance relayed:

I can’t tell you how excited I am to join the extraordinary cast of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians!’ […] I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug.

Speaking about the devoted fanbase of the mythology and Rick Riordan’s wildly successful novels, Vance reveals his intimate knowledge about the franchise he is about to step into. As such, the fans have been assured that Vance will be able to do justice to the legacy of Lance Reddick’s character.

Meanwhile, his predecessor, Lance Reddick will remain etched in the fans’ memory via his last appearance in the John Wick spinoff film, Ballerina.

The world of fiction has never been able to drive away the exhilarating rush that comes from every reading or viewing of a project. Reboots of the same franchise have survived solely on the foundations of the power of imagination. Franchises like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and the comic book industry have spanned the expanse of pop culture lore but fans are yet to get bored of the umpteenth spinoffs greenlit by the studios.

Walker Scobell’s arc as the son of Poseidon thus has the fans celebrating every little adventure that his character steps into in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Despite Logan Lerman’s movie series, the new Disney+ adaptation has fans relating more to the series reboot due to the relevance of the source material. The streamer also allowed space for proper representation, unlike the previous movie adaptation.

Rated at 91% by the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the mass consensus applauds the series for being a faithful adaptation of the Rick Riordan novels. Percy Jackson and the Olympians has impressed adults and teens alike for being a ‘lovingly realized odyssey through adolescence and myth.’

The only hurdle faced by the series involves the tragic and premature passing of the beloved actor, Lance Reddick whose role will now be recast and portrayed by the Law & Order star, Courtney B. Vance.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is streaming on Disney+.
