Just last month, it seemed like Bryce Young’s days in the NFL were over.
At least, his days as a starter.
The Carolina Panthers pulled the plug on him and benched him in Andy Dalton’s favor.
That decision was met with mixed reviews.
As much as Young hadn’t looked the part yet, it was too soon to give up on him, especially after all they gave up to get him, not to mention that he had two different head coaches in his first year in the league.
Dalton got hurt in an accident, and Young has looked much better since his return.
That’s why, after watching the Panthers put up 27 against the Kansas City Chiefs, J.J. Watt took to X to share his thoughts on the matter:
“Bryce Young’s numbers today aren’t going to blow anyone away, but his performance against a very good Chiefs defense does speak to the argument for letting young players develop and grow before making an ultimate judgement on them,” he said.

Young completed 21 of 35 passes for one touchdown and no interceptions, and he was pretty close to throwing for another one early in the first half.
He also ran the ball three times for 20 yards.
Those might not be the video game-caliber numbers one would want to see from a No. 1 pick, but Young has shown he can play in this league.
Teams throw their young quarterbacks into the fire when they’re still not ready, and they rush to judge them when things don’t work out.
The Panthers have been a dysfunctional franchise for years, and perhaps Young would’ve looked much better playing elsewhere.
For now, it seems that he’ll live for another day and get another chance to showcase his skills.
