A Cardiff City fan has been banned from football stadiums after he threw coins at rival Swansea City fans during a recent South Wales derby. Sam Bright, from Pentwyn, Cardiff, was arrested for a public order offence following the match between the two clubs at the Swansea.com stadium on August 25, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

According to South Wales Police, the 46-year-old was seen throwing a missile from within the away end in the stadium into a section occupied by the home fans. On September 11 Bright appeared at Swansea Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to breaching the Football (offences) Act 1991 (throwing missiles at area adjacent to pitch). He was handed a three-year Football Banning Order, which prohibits him from attending regulated football matches in the UK. According to the UK Government: “A football banning order (FBO) is a civil order which may be made by a court to help prevent violence or disorder at, or in connection with, regulated football matches. An individual with a FBO cannot attend regulated football matches in the UK. A FBO lasts between three and 10 years. Breaching the terms of an order is a criminal offence, punishable by a maximum sentence of 6 months in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.”

Following Bright’s sentencing, PC Christian Evans of South Wales Police said: “The overwhelming majority of people who attend the Swansea.com Stadium behave responsibly and enjoy a safe experience. I hope this court result sends out a clear message that similar behaviour will not be tolerated at the stadium.”
