Casey White was able to escape from prison in 2022 but couldn’t evade capture or a new sentence, as detailed in Jailbreak: Love on the Run. The 2024 Netflix true crime documentary film follows the true story of Casey and Vicky White, a couple who were the source of widespread media attention when she helped him break out of prison. Prior to the escape, Vicky White worked as the assistant director of operations at the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, Alabama, (where Casey White was imprisoned) for 17 years. However, her final day on the job didn’t go as expected.
After her retirement party, Vicky White told her co-workers she was escorting Casey White to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation. But they never returned to the prison. The police then learned that Casey and Vicky White had a secret relationship that had been ongoing for two years. They claimed to be in love, but love wasn’t enough to save them from their fate. Casey and Vicky White were on the run for 11 days before the police found them, taking the former into custody. As for Vicky White, she later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her head.

According to TODAY, before breaking out of prison with Vicky White’s help, Casey White was serving a 75-year sentence for various crimes he committed in 2015 at the Lauderdale County Detention Center. He was also awaiting trial for the murder of Connie Ridgeway. However, following his prison escape and subsequent capture, he pleaded guilty to escape and was sentenced to life in prison in June 2023. His guilty plea came in exchange for prosecutors dropping a felony murder charge for Vicky White’s death. He is currently serving his life sentence at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Alabama.

Following his sentencing, Casey White apologized for his crimes (per NBC News). He explained:
“We just wanted a new life together because she knew the truth. I can handle the truth because I know who I am. I chose this road. It’s cost me my life and freedom.”

After Casey White’s trial for his prison escape in July 2023, prosecutors suspended the capital murder case for Connie Ridgeway’s 2015 death with her family’s support. As of the writing of this article, White continues serving his life sentence without the possibility of parole (which he is serving concurrently with his prior 75-year sentence) at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility. Meanwhile, as revealed in the 2024 Netflix true crime documentaryJailbreak: Love on the Run, Vicky White was rushed to the hospital after the couple’s capture and was pronounced dead hours later.
