Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney will face former Old Trafford teammate Tom Cleverley tonight in a managerial battle.

Rooney is currently the manager of Plymouth Argyle. The Pilgrims currently find themselves 18th in the Championship, one point above relegation. The United icon will be trying to prove his managerial skills after a failed showing at Birmingham City earlier this year.

Although Plymouth is a new leaf for Rooney, tonight’s game will take him back to his United playing days when he faces Cleverley. The pair spent two seasons as teammates at Old Trafford. The midfielder ended his career at Watford, after 129 appearances, where he is now manager.

Despite the fact that Rooney was in no doubt the better player, Cleverley is doing better as manager so far though it is still early days The Hornets are sixth in the Championship; the final playoff position.

Even though Rooney has had a rocky time in management since his short stint at St. Andrew’s, his name is still a valuable asset. Ahead of the match, MEN Sport has taken a look at his net worth.

What is Rooney’s net worth?

According to reports, Rooney is worth a staggering £170m based on his career earnings to date. While at United, the forward earned a salary of approximately £300,000 per week, including his commercial partnerships.

When he moved to America to join DC United as a player, Rooney earned roughly £2.6m per year. Before being sacked by Birmingham, it was widely reorted that he was earning £29,000 per week for his services at St Andrew’s but he hit back at claims over his pay packet.

“There’s lots of stuff, especially with it being me,” Rooney said on speculation about his salary during his time at Blues.

“I understand that. There’s lot of rumours which go round, but what’s been out there is a load of rubbish, to be honest.”

How much is Rooney earning at Plymouth?

Now being over 250 miles away from his £20m mansion in Cheshire, the former England captain is still earning a staggering amount of money. It is reported that he is pocketing a salary of £500k-per-year, claims The Guardian.

This wage is an accurate representation of a modest Championship pay packet. His status has led to interest in a documentary about his time on the south coast, with Rooney saying earlier this week that Plymouth will benefit financially from the decision.

“I think for the football club financially it will help, which is really important for us where we’re at,” he said.
