Angelina Jolie Once Shared Why Seeing Flaws in People ‘Turns Me On’

Angelina Jolie might’ve been attracted to past lovers like Brad Pitt, Billy Bob Thornton, and others for unique reasons. Whereas many looked at features like good looks or a great personality in a potential partner, Jolie needed her aspiring suitors to have flaws.

Depending on what someone might see as their flaws, they’re usually viewed as physical or emotional imperfections that are meant to be rid of. But Jolie has the exact opposite relationship with the word. Instead, there are some flaws Jolie felt are meant to be embraced. This view has helped her look forward to things like aging. Whereas some dread and may even fight getting older, Jolie embraces it and all the flaws it might bring.

“I look in the mirror and I see that I look like my mother, and that warms me,” Jolie said in an interview with People. “I also see myself aging, and I love it because it means I’m alive — I’m living and getting older. Don’t love having a random dark spot from a pregnancy, sure. I see my flaws. But what I see that I like isn’t about a structure or an appearance. It’s more that I see my family in my face. I see my age.”

It’s a belief that Jolie’s stayed true to ever since she was younger. Back then, flaws were one of the traits she looked for in her lovers the most. It was why she was never really interested in going under the knife like some of her contemporaries.

“I love flaws on people,” she once told Wind City Times. “When I see life on the face of a person changing, getting older, a new wrinkle, a new spot, I love it. It turns me on. I personally am not into plastic surgery but I have nothing against anyone who chooses to use it to enhance their looks or self-esteem.”

But this doesn’t mean Jolie has no standards when dating others. Jolie has reportedly been single for quite some time after her divorce from Pitt. After dealing with the challenges of marriage, there’s a laundry list of things she isn’t willing to put up with from a boyfriend.

“I probably have a very long list,” Jolie once told E! News (via Yahoo! Life) regarding her deal breakers.

Angelina Jolie thought it was important to show her flaws with Brad Pitt while they were in a relationship

Jolie took a big risk when she collaborated with her ex-husband Pitt in the movie By the Sea. It was the second film the pair did since 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the film which kickstarted their romance to begin with. Unlike the spy thriller, however, Jolie and Pitt would be married while playing a married couple on screen. But in By the Sea, the wife and husband the two were playing were in a crumbling relationship they were trying to hold on to.

In an interview in The New York Times, Jolie was asked if the fights she and Pitt had in the movie might’ve worried her at all. There was a possibility audiences might confuse their tension in By the Sea for their real-life problem. But Jolie wasn’t bothered by that reaction. Instead, she felt it was important to showcase the flaws in her marriage with Pitt even in a fictional setting. Especially since, by her own admission back then, her marriage was far from perfect.

“I think you have to accept that. But if people think these are our particular issues, well, that’s wrong. But if they want to think we have terrible fights, are imperfect, have insecurities and can be depressed and emotional, of course that’s true. We have problems, arguments. We are two very human, flawed people. And I think that’s a good thing to show,” she said.
