It took Sean Payton longer than some anticipated, but the head coach’s hand is finally showing for the Denver Broncos.

The team has been much better than some people thought coming into this season.

They went through a bit of a roster overhaul, mostly due to salary-cap casualties from their decision to move on from quarterback Russell Wilson.

However, the team is performing well, particularly on defense.

According to PFF on X, the Broncos lead the NFL in total pressures (227) this season.

The Broncos have kept opposing quarterbacks guessing and on their toes for most of the campaign.

They’ve been able to flip the field and put their offense in a position to succeed more often than not.

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix has drawn plenty of praise for how he’s played, and rightfully so, as he’s made the most of the resources he’s had around him to keep the chains moving.

But the team has relied on its defense en route to a 6-5 start to the season.

The Broncos will continue to suffer from the salary cap implications of dumping Wilson for another season.

But once their young players take a step forward, and with some minor tweaks and additions, it shouldn’t take much longer before this team is a true contender.

The Kansas City Chiefs have the AFC West in a chokehold, but with the up-and-coming Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers there, that might change sooner rather than later.
